The Taro Twin Downlight is attractively designed, and finished in brushed aluminium. Its creator, Astro, is a British company highly respected for stylish, contemporary light fittings and high-quality manufacturing. This 2-light fitting features 35° tiltable heads, which are perfect for accent or overall lighting purposes.
An IP20 rating restricts installation of the Taro Twin Downlight to dry areas, since it offers no protection against water. This Class 1 fitting also requires a connection to electrical earth.
Because the Taro Twin Downlight is not fire-rated it should only be installed in a ceiling with a roof space above. Fire safety regulations preclude its use in a ceiling below an occupied area of a building, since the cut-out used in its installation makes it easier for flames to take hold and may jeopardise the evacuation of anyone above.
Fire-rating regulations
The Taro Twin Downlight - Brushed Aluminium is not fire-rated. If you are planning to install this product into a building or location that is governed by building regulations, you will also need to purchase and install an appropriate intumescent firehood in conjunction with it to retain the fire-rating integrity of the ceiling. If in doubt please consult your electrician / installer.
Bulb requirements
The Taro Twin Downlight takes a maximum 2x 50W GU10 halogen spotlights (sold separately).
Though halogen bulbs will be markedly cheaper upfront, equivalent LEDs will save you up to 90% in running costs and last 10 to 25 times longer. Because LED is naturally directional as a light source it is particularly energy-efficient as a spotlight, with very little light spilling outside of the beam.
