Co-founder of Luminosity, Claire Norcross took an unconventional route into lighting design; she started out with a B.A. Honours degree in embroidery, but this was to prove a catalyst in discovering her true vocation. It was a fascination with the effect of light on materials that inspired Claire to tentatively enter into the world of designer lighting, and she achieved success early on with an award-winning ‘Eight-Fifty’ table lamp at the 100% Design trade show in 1999.
After its maiden award the Eight-Fifty continued to gain recognition with inclusion in the Conran Collections at the Design Museum and the Made in Manchester Galleries at Manchester Art Galleries. A pendant version of the same design took the fancy of home décor giants, Habitat, and having entered into mass production that also won a Reader’s choice award for Design from Elle Decoration in 2002.
Claire went on to work as Habitat’s in-house lighting designer, but only after a 4-year spell as a resident artist at the Object Australian Design Centre, in Sydney, all the while exhibiting nationally and internationally. These years of creative freedom followed by invaluable commercial experience laid a crucial cornerstone for Luminosity - an exciting designer-lighting venture formed in 2011 by Claire and Rob Payne.
Claire’s portfolio at Luminosity is varied in its range, but the designs are consistently appealing, and often breathtakingly beautiful. With a particular penchant for using paper, Claire created the remarkable ‘Aperture’ shade, using numerous adjustable apertures to cast bewitching lighting effects onto nearby décor. Inspired by the adaptability of an opening and closing pine cone, this is a lighting masterpiece!
Whether you’re a restaurateur or hotelier looking for lighting pizazz, or an office manager seeking to create a lasting impression, you can turn to Luminosity.
