The popular Calex brand name was acquired back in 1987 by Electro Cirkel - a Dutch company that had cut its teeth at the beginning of the 1970s when two entrepreneurial brothers were selling navigation lamps to the briefly moored ships in Rotterdam harbour. Out of sheer necessity, the business built by Rudy and Loek van Soelen was brisk and efficient right from the start.
A leading light
With a Calex factory set up in Schiedam, near Rotterdam, Electro Cirkel had launched what is now their flagship brand, and quickly took advantage of this new impetus to become one of the world’s leading suppliers of navigation lamps. Even today the Schiedam facility supplies custom-made navigation lamps to the marine industry, but when management of this family business eventually passed to nephews Pieter and Rudolf van Soelen, the focus of the brand shifted to consumer lighting.
A treasure trove of bulbs
The Schiedam factory remains very active, but with connections to major manufacturing plants in China and innumerable other contacts accessible worldwide, Electro Cirkel are nimble-footed enough to meet any production demands. The Calex catalogue is a treasure trove of bulbs of all shapes and sizes, with all popular technologies represented.
Calex is a manufacturer with an eye focused firmly on the future, but their stunning collection of decorative filament lamps proves they’re not beyond a little nostalgia. The Goldline range uses a design that borrows from the old carbon-filament bulbs of 100 years ago, and the effect is mesmerising - a beautifully warm and calming bulb that’s ideal for creating ambience in hospitality environments.
Whether you’re buying into the past or the future, the much-travelled Calex brand name is one you can trust implicitly for quality and innovation.
